Reducing the nuclear arsenal. Sounds like a nice thing to do doesn't it? Honestly, let us think about this for a moment or two. One less nuclear weapon to worry about. Fewer children having nightmares about a monstrous mushroom cloud looming over their cities? Less people worrying if their pet turtle is going to turn into Gamera or some crap like that.
Yes America, in a perfect world, limiting the role of our nuclear arms program is an excellent idea; however, we do not live in a perfect world, now do we? Oh no, we live in a world where the newest four letter world to most cultures is America. We live in a world were people smile in our face as we visit their countries, while eagerly waiting for us to turn our backs just long enough for, well you get the picture. The inconvenient truth is that people in other nations ate Americans. It does not matter if you are a White American, a Black American, or a Little Green Martian American, people around the world have it in for us. This is true even of our allies. Sure, Great Brittan looks at America as a dedicated ally, but it is not hard to see that deep down inside, they are still a little pissed off at how this brash band of rebels turned the crown into a laughing stock.
With all of the hostility in the world towards America, we can rest in the comfort of one little tidbit of knowledge. People don't mess with us because we have enough nuclear firepower to make it a bad day for anyone who may even remotely consider an attack on our sovereignty. Because of our nuclear arsenal, Russia keeps to themselves, China stays put, and any other rogue nation thinks 1 million times about doing something as stupid as launching an attack on America. The old "If We Do, They Will" way of thinking keeps most of our enemies right where we want them, off of our shores. Certainly an elephant will crush a mouse, but if that mouse a tank, the elephant thinks twice about stepping on the mouse.
Why is this important? I'll tell you. We, America, are in a unique position to where we have an awful lot of leverage in negotiation. We, don't want to lose said leverage. I feel that is what we are about to do with the President's recent announcement that we are going to limit the role of our nuclear forces. Imagine this, the kids in your neighborhood had these bottle cap guns. Basically a 2x4 with a clothes pin and a good strong rubber band. You build a bottle cap gun that is capable of firing 4 bottle caps at the same time. It is possible because I made one. This is your primary defense weapon. You and your friend meet, and you suggest that you will only fire one bottle cap at a time from you r nice four shooter. Seems fair, right? Yeah, until four of your friends attack you. We decide to limit the role of our nuclear forces to just Iran and North Korea, as I believe it was suggested, and now China has an in, and France has an in, and Russia has an in, as do several rogue former USSR republics who still have the left over nukes from the cold war. That is the making of a bad day for the home team.
Bottom line is this America; to so much as suggest that we, America, would limit the roles of our nuclear forces without assurance that countries like Iran, North Korea, Syria, and other nations who harbor a disdain for America do not have nuclear weapons is completely irresponsible. Not to mention limiting the role of our nuclear forces without assurance that Russia is doing the very same is the equivalent of tying the right hand of Evander Hollifield behind his back, and sending him into the right against Mike Tyson. What President Obama is hoping is that the world will follow our lead. Well, in a perfect world, and in the movies, the world will follow our lead; however, in this hell hole of a world that we presently live in, other countries would much rather trample on our backs, than to follow us anywhere. I applaud President Obama for trying, but I believe he is slightly over zealous with this one here. It is ok to talk about nuclear arms control, but the smart move is to ensure everyone else is doing it at the same time we do. It we have 100 B-52's, let us not reduce that force to 30 while Russia still has 90 TU-92's if you understand where I am going with that one. We live in a hostile world, now is not the time to play poker with our nation's defense.
